  • Camera
Camera: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K Ways to record: Connect the camera to your computer using the HDMI cable and the USB Camlink. You will find the cable and adapter on the shelf in the studio closet labeled "HDMI to USB." The HDMI output is on the left side of the camera. Your computer will see the camera as a webcam and you can record using software such as Riverside or Quicktime. NOTE: Check the recording resolution in your software. The camera is capable of up to 4k resolution but you may need to select that option in your software and your software may have resolution limits. Bring your own USB-C Solid State Hard Drive or an SD Card and record directly from the camera. You will need a card or hard drive that is very fast and has plenty of room on it. The camera will automatically stop recording if it's not fast enough. Setting up the camera: NOTE: If you are by yourself, use method 1 above so that you can see what the camera is capturing on your computer. Setting up the camera will be difficult if you cannot see yourself in place through the camera. Turn on the camera using the power switch on the top of the camera. NOTE: Make sure the power cord is plugged in Turn on and set all lighting you will be using Adjust camera settings if necessary. NOTE: Screen is a touch screen (From top left of screen to top right) - Framerate (FPS): 24 or 30 is standard. - Shutter: Can be set to auto. Changes the brightness - Iris: 1.8 recommended. Lower number = brighter and shallow depth of field (more blurred out background, harder to focus) Higher number = Less bright and deep depth of field (less blurred out background, easier to focus) - White Balance (WB): Auto setting is recommended unless you feel comfortable setting yourself. Lower number = Colder Higher number = Warmer - Set your recording settings using the 3 horizontal line button to the right of the screen. Here are the recommended settings for 4k recording. Change to HD 1080 if preferable. Manually focus the lens (autofocus not available). Twist the grip of the lens until in focus. TIP: Zoom in using the magnifying glass + button to the right of the screen or zoom in on your computer to make sure you are fully in focus. Tips for using camera with teleprompter Fully surround the lens with the black cloth to avoid glare Look closely at the monitor before recording to ensure none of the black cloth is in front of the lens.
  • Audio Interface
Plug into your computer using the usb-c cable. Use an adapter if needed Select the interface as your input device in your software of choice Use the dials next to each input to adjust the gain for each microphone. Gain the microphones loud (green indicator around dial) while making sure they are not clipping (red indicator around dial) - The 48V button DOES NOT need to be on to use the the Shure SM7Bs. They do however need to be gained up pretty high to get a good input level. - The 48V button DOES need to be on to use the Slate shotgun mic in the tall boom stand
  • Microphones
Use the XLRs on the shelf in the studio closet to connect the microphones to the interface or camera. If connecting directly to a camera, use the XLR to 1/8" cable or a regular XLR cable with the blue XLR to Mini XLR adapter. About the microphones: Shure SM7Bs - Standard professional level podcast microphone - The 48V button DOES NOT need to be on - They do however need to be gained up pretty high to get a good input level. Slate Shotgun Mic in tall boom stand - Best used for videos where you do not want a microphone in the shot - The 48V button DOES need to be on to use - Get the microphone as close to the sound source as possible and point it directly at it
  • Lights
NOTE: Usually it looks best to turn off the main lightswitch in the room and just use the studio lights How to use the lights: Make sure the main power extension cord that runs around the room is plugged in on the back wall of the studio . Lights should automatically turn on when plugged in. Key lights: Turn on and adjust brightness using the dial on the box connected to the power cord Soft box lights: Turn on using the small switch hanging from each light. You can adjust the brightness and warmth from the white remote hanging in the box by the lightswitch by the studio door.
  • Teleprompter
Setting up the teleprompter hardware: Fully set up the camera for the shot you want. Use the tripod to adjust your framing and keep the camera looking straight down the middle of the teleprompter glass Fully surround the camera lens with the black cloth Once the script is loaded, lay the ipad on the tray in the front of the teleprompter Setting up the teleprompter app/script: Grab the ipad from the shelf in the studio closet Open the right teleprompter app. For most uses, we recommend the PromptSmart Pro app because you can load the script and it will listen to your voice and follow along. If you'd prefer to use the remote to manually scroll, you can find it on the shelf in the studio closet and use the Neewer teleprompter app. Create a new script, copy and paste your text in using google drive, chrome, airdrop, etc. Be sure to click the "mirror" setting
